Doch Hüte Deine Seele
 
Hast du ein Leid zu tragen,
Das Gott dir zugefandt,
So beuge sonder Murren
Dich unter seiner Hand.

But Guard Your Soul
 
You have a sorrow to bear
That God has given you.
So bow without murmuring
Under a gentle hand.

In demutsvollem Glauben
Ertrage still dein Weh;
Auf ihn vertrauend bete:
“Dein Wille, Herr, gescheh’!”

In humble faith
Bear your pain in silence;
Trusting in him pray:
"Thy will, Lord, be done!"

Und brachten Menschenworte
Und Menschenhänd’ dir Schmertz —
O grolle nicht, verschließe
Dem bittern Haß dein Herz;

And if the words of human beings
And human hands have brought you pain,
Oh do not resent it. Do not shut the door
Of your heart to bitter hatred.

Und öffne seine Pforten
Der Güte milden Schein,
Aus tiefer Seele lerne
Vergessen und verzeih’n.

May the mild glow of goodness
Open the gates of your heart.
Learn from the depths of your soul
To forget and forgive.

Doch ward durch eignes Fehlen
Unglück und Schmach dein Teil,
Weh dir! du trägst das schwerste,
Ein Leid, schier ohne Heil!

But if through your own lack
Misfortune and disgrace become your lot,
Woe to you! You will suffer the heaviest —
A suffering almost without rescue!

Was Gott und Menschen fügten
Ertrage mit Geduld —
Doch hüte deine Seele
Vor — Leid durch eigne Schuld!
