Adelheid Mueller: The Call to St. Lucas Evangelical Lutheran Church
In early October 1930, Adelheid Mueller received a formal call from St. Lucas Evangelical Lutheran Church, a Wisconsin-Synod congregation in Milwaukee. It was dated September 12, postmarked September 28. She was 23 at the time and had been teaching school in La Crosse, Wisconsin — her first job after graduating from Dr. Martin Luther College (Class of 1929). Adelheid evidently had learned that the call was coming and discussed it with her parents. Pastor Köhler’s letter mentions that Viola Oetchen, already a teacher at St. Lucas, was eager to have Adelheid as a roommate. For whatever reason, Adelheid made other living arrangements, renting a room from Albert and Margaret Nickel, two members of the church.
