Familie Müller arrives at Castle Garden The 11-member Mueller family arrived in New York harbor on Sunday, October 1, according to Fritz’s journal, and went ashore at Castle Garden the next day. They traveled in first cabin and were the first people listed on Capt. B. Forstmann’s 362-passenger manifest given under oath to Port of New York authorities. All the Muellers, even the small children, were listed as German farmers headed for Indiana: Fritz Müller, male, 42 (note umlaut in U.S. records); Johanna, female, 45; Theodora, female, 21; Lisabeth, female, 20; Wilhelm, male, 18; Erich, male, 16; Emma, female, 15; Friederich, male, 10; Enno, male [mistakenly entered as female], 9; Hans, male, 6; and Gertrude, female, 5. The listed ages likely reflect the point at which Fritz booked passage, since, Fritz, Wilhelm, Erich, Friederich, Hans, and Gertrude were actually a year older on arrival than their recorded ages. |
